Fours Head
November 9th, 2008The run up to Four’s Head has not been as smooth as I might have hoped, with injury and illness spreading amongst the squad. However we arrived in Putney to rig the boats ready to show that we had made a good start to the trialling year.
Conditions on the day were challenging; strong wind and rain meant that the water was quite choppy in places, which provided a sharp reminder of the choppy conditions which we are expecting at Henley next March.
I was racing in CUW III, along with the bow girl and cox from my Blondie crew, and two new triallists. There was a long wait at the start before our category (WS3) was set off. The race started well, we had a strong solid start and soon settled into our race rhythm. Before long we started to overtake the crews in front of us. We came passed Cambridge 99′s III easily, before inching passed the Oxford Brooks crew which had started in front of us. When we crossed the finish line we were confident that we had rowed well, but were slightly concerned that we could have pushed a little bit harder.
When the results were published, we were very pleased to see that we had one our category, beating all of the other Cambridge fours and five of the seven Oxford fours in the process.

Cambridge Autumn Head
October 24th, 2008Cambridge Autumn Head was CUWBC’s first race of the year and it was the first chance for the new squad to show what they could do. We entered a lightweight eight, which raced twice, and 4 coxed fours (3 heavyweight, 1 lightweight), who also raced as 2 eights. The lightweight eight posted two good times, but they were beaten by two of the fours who combined to race as an eight. This crew posted the fastest women’s time of the day, winning the Senior 3 category.
The fours also performed well, winning both the Senior 3 and Senior 4 categories.
The focus now is on the Fours Head of the River Race in two weeks time. Four crews have been entered; two in WS2 4+ and two in the WS3 4+ (academic) category.
See http://www.hor4s.org.uk/ for full details, and check back soon for a report on the days racing.

Start of Trialling 2008
September 30th, 2008After the summer break, this year’s trialling season began in two waves, with half the squad starting in the first week, and the remainder joining in the following weekend. I am quite excited by the potential that the squad is showing at this early stage and am looking forward to helping them to achieve their potential!
Initially our training will be split between fours and eights and we will gradually settle into crews for the lead up to the first races of the year; Cambridge Autumn Head on 18th October and the Fours Head of the River Race on 8th November.
Following this, all training will move to Ely and we will train in eights. Michaelmas term will also bring the Fairbairn Cup races and will finish with the Trial Eights race at Dorney Lake on 17th December.
Check back here for regular updates on our progress throughout the year.

Development Squad 2008
July 23rd, 2008Each summer we run a four week Development Squad, which gives college rowers get the chance to experience University rowing. This year we increased the the capacity to five eights, and all five entered Kingston Regatta on the third weekend, and finished by competing at the National Championships, which were held on Holme Pierre Point in Nottingham.
We arrived in Kingston on a beautiful summers day ready to race. The three lane course provided valuable side by side experience for all the crews, and we finished the day with victories in the Novice and Senior 3 categories.
We weren’t greeted by such fine weather in Nottingham the following weekend. Instead we faced cross winds that were strong even for Holme Pierre Point! A difficult lane draw put all the CUW crews in the most badly affected lanes in the heats, but the top heavyweight boat and the lightweight crew made it through to the repêchage, where we finished third and fourth, not quite making it through to the final.
In all, the day provided some challenges and some valuable experiences for all the crews and everyone was given a taste of what it is like to row in challenging conditions.

Henley Boat Races 2008 – race report
March 26th, 2008The Henley Boat races 2008 were held on March 23rd in unseasonably cold weather and high winds, although fortunately the conditions did not require the shortening of the course as in 2007. The organizers agreed, however, that the weather would be likely to be better earlier in the day, so the Women’s Blue boat race was swapped with that of the heavyweight reserves. Unfortunately, the weather did worsen throughout the day, making it challenging for all crews and extremely disruptive to the Blondie/Osiris reserves race.
The the first race of the day was the Women’s Blues. Both crews got off to a good start, despite the extremely choppy water in the first 500-meters of the course. The CUWBC Blue Boat pulled out to a slight lead in the first 250 but Oxford coped with the conditions better coming into the 500, pulling out to around a third of a length. Cambridge continued to push the strong Oxford crew and by the 1500, Cambridge took up the rating and looked to be gaining on Oxford. Yet the dark blues responded to our final charge, holding CUWBC to a half length at the finish. Nevertheless, it was a race for the Blue Boat to be proud of, as many were predicting a procession following the 30s defeat at WeHoRR 3 weeks previously.
The next race was the Lightweight Women, who were fired up after great improvements in the last few weeks of training. The race was a close one, with Oxford taking a slight lead in the first 500m. However, CUWBC’s better rhythm and bladework in the choppy conditions edged them past in the middle of the race. Despite a late charge by the Oxford crew, they held them off at the end to win by a third of a length, the closest race of the day, and prevented a Dark Blue clean sweep on the day.
The Blondie versus Osiris race began in very challenging conditions, with spray flying off both crew’s blades as they battled through the choppy water. Coming up towards the 500 meters, Blondie were rowing strongly and ahead of the Osiris crew. However, disaster struck in the form of a particularly vicious wave, which resulted in an unavoidable boat-stopping crab, and their race was effectively over. After recovering, they made up significant ground on Osiris, but sadly never enough to challenge them.
